Did the clock finally run out? Or is there still just a little time? One last chance to get this started Before I cross the finish line Well, I’m the rookie of the year Around here I’m the rookie of the year Yeah, I'm the rookie of the year And it’s clear All the veterans are shaking with fear Last chance was finally granted A few final touches to be done At least i can say that it’s finally finished No longer hanging over me like the sun Well, I’m the rookie of the year Around here I’m the rookie of the year Yeah, I'm the rookie of the year And it’s clear All the veterans are shaking with fear Let the praise Fall on me now I'm sure it will come Let the praise Fall on me Any minute now Let the praise Fall on me One last final time Well, I’m the rookie of the year Around here I’m the rookie of the year Yeah, I'm the rookie of the year And it’s clear All the veterans are shaking with fear

Last Chance 03:41
With the boat sinking now And the anchors not thrown It’s a pretty good sign That the crew’s had enough We can batten the hatch down And ready up I'm a pretty good swimmer But the tides are lookin’ rough How did they let this happen? (How did it get this far?) They say this ship is crashin’ (And i can’t see the shore) Last chance to turn around (Last chance to turn around) Before the ship goes down Last chance to turn around (Last chance to turn around) I can feel it sinking now If you think you can Swim good enough (Then you might just have A little bit of luck) If you think you can’t Swim good enough (Then the end of the story might be a little rough) How cold could it be out there? I guess that we’ll find out That plank is big enough for two But ill just paddle for now I can see the sun is risin’ Will I make it another day? Is that rescue on the horizon? Is help on the way? Last chance to turn around (Last chance to turn around) Before the ship goes down Last chance to turn around (Last chance to turn around) I can feel it sinking now If you think you can Swim good enough (Then you might just have A little bit of luck) If you think you can’t Swim good enough (Then the end of the story might be a little rough) And The sharks Are coming to play Coming in From the bay Is help on the way? The siren song continues to play Last chance to turn around (Last chance to turn around) Before the ship goes down Last chance to turn around (Last chance to turn around) I can feel it sinking now If you think you can Swim good enough (Then you might just have A little bit of luck) If you think you can’t Swim good enough (Then the end of the story might be a little rough)

How is it up there? Are they treating you well? The family’s in minnesota now I think that life’s been hell Since you’ve been gone We’ve been doing our best To keep moving on But that’s just the way The way it is I look towards the sky See you up high But i know There’s nothing up there It’s just a hope I'll feel you in the air Falling apart and Getting put together You missed some good things I’ll fill you in later Falling apart and Getting put together I'll see you again and I’ll fill I’ll fill you in I'm married now And living in the south In a pretty nice house A house you’ve never seen And will never see But I feel you in it All the same anyway Falling apart and Getting put together You missed some good things I’ll fill you in later Falling apart and Getting put together I'll see you again and I’ll fill I’ll fill you in Falling apart and Getting put together You missed some good things I’ll fill you in later I'll see you again At the end Of my life If you wait a little while

My makeup is dry and it cracks 'round my chin I'm drowning my sorrows in whisky and gin The lion tamer's whip doesn't crack anymore The lions, they won't bite and the tigers won't roar So let's all drink to the death of a clown Won't someone help me to break up this crown Let's all drink to the death of a clown Let's all drink to the death of a clown The old fortune teller lies dead on the floor Nobody needs fortunes told anymore The trainer of insects is crouched on his knees And frantically looking for runaway fleas Let's all drink to the death of a clown So won't someone help me to break up this crown Let's all drink to the death of a clown Let's all drink to the death of a clown La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la (times infinity)

about

After a decade-plus of playing in various nondescript high school and college bands as a guitarist or bassist, Patrick Haynes decided to write his own songs. The first foray into fulfilling that goal is the No Smiles EP from Expert Frowner, due out October 7, 2022 via Bandcamp and all streaming platforms.

Expert Frowner pulls influence from three primary sources: Britpop hooks of the 90s, specifically those of the Oasis (good band) variety; post-punk guitars and vocals akin to Joy Division and Interpol (good bands); and ripping guitar solos inspired by J Mascis and other punk-leaning alternative (good) bands. The result is the power-pop-punk sound of No Smiles.

It’s an EP born of the extra time at home caused by the pandemic. Haynes recorded all the vocals, guitars and bass on the EP in Charlotte, with Miguel Vasquez (Echo Base) adding drums from Philadelphia. It was mixed by Steve Kelly (Sinking Ships Records) and mastered by Jon Markson (Drug Church, Taking Meds).

Themes range from tongue-in-cheek self-deprecation, like when Haynes describes himself as a rookie songwriter on lead single release “Rookie of the Year,” (releasing Sept. 27, 2022), despite being a decade older than most new musicians. More serious topics like dealing with the death of a parent surface on “See You Again.” No Smiles also includes a cover of the Kinks’ “Death of a Clown,” which Haynes always wanted to hear distorted and loud, as if a ‘90s power-pop band wrote it instead of a ‘60s British-Invasion group.

The self-release of No Smiles is intended to serve as a calling card to be followed by a full-length Expert Frowner LP in 2023.
